What You'll Need Before You Start
Before pressing your first DTF transfer, gather your supplies:
- Heat press (clamshell or swing-away — avoid household irons for best results)
- Your DTF transfer from JustLostKey
- The garment you're applying to (100% cotton or cotton-poly blend recommended)
- Parchment or silicone sheet (to protect the transfer)
Step 1: Pre-Press Your Garment
Place your garment on the heat press and press for 3–5 seconds with medium pressure. This removes moisture and wrinkles, giving you a flat, even surface. Moisture is the #1 enemy of a clean transfer - don't skip this step.
Step 2: Position Your Transfer
Place the DTF transfer ink-side down on the garment. Use a ruler or alignment guide to centre it. For chest prints, the standard placement is approximately 3–4 inches below the collar. Use heat-resistant tape at the edges if needed to prevent shifting if needed.
Step 3: Set Your Heat Press
Dial in these settings for most DTF transfers:

Note: Always test on a scrap piece of fabric first.
Step 4: Press
Lower the press firmly and evenly. Do not lift or shift the press mid-cycle. When the timer goes off, lift the press straight up.
Step 5: Peel
JustLostKey's transfers are hot peel - meaning you peel the carrier film immediately while the transfer is still warm. Peel quickly and at a low angle (almost parallel to the garment surface).
Step 6: Final Press
Place a parchment sheet, a silicone cover sheet, the used transfer film, or even a shirt over the finished transfer, then press again for 5-8 seconds. This bonds the ink fully into the fabric fibres and gives the print a smoother, more professional finish.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping the pre-press: Moisture causes bubbling and poor adhesion.
- Not enough pressure: Can peel the image up when pulling up the film.
- Using a household iron: Uneven heat distribution causes patchy results.
Troubleshooting Quick Reference
- Edges lifting: Increase pressure.
- Powder left on garment: Use more heat; repress the print with a shirt to remove excess powder.
